Are checks received from Bidirectional Energy taxable as income?
V2G payments usually are, and both rebates and utility bill savings are usually not.
Bidirectional Energy does not provide tax advice; program participants are advised to consult their tax professional for all tax-related questions.
In broad strokes, you will receive two types of payments from Bidirectional Energy:
- If you are accepted into a program with a rebate, the first is a rebate on your equipment and installation that will be paid after your system is live. In most cases, state clean energy rebates are not treated as taxable income, because they are generally considered a purchase price adjustment rather than earnings. However, tax situations can vary based on your specific circumstances and the type of rebate.
- The second type of payment are performance incentive checks received as payment for grid services (V2G) received annually. (See program duration.) In contrast to a rebate, these typically count as taxable income.
You can also receive utility bill credits or savings from the bidirectional charger's V2H capabilities, and these are also not typically considered income by the IRS.
